Why is Propecia for Men Only?

September 11th, 2009

Short Answer:

Propecia is not recommended for use by women or children.  It has been found that these drugs can cause birth defects.

Long Answer:

Propecia works by blocking the action of an enzyme. In adult men this enzyme is linked to the hair loss process, but in pregnant women, this enzyme is involved in the development of healthy male babies. Interfering or blocking this enzyme in a pregnant woman could affect the health of the unborn child.

Women who are or might be pregnant must not use Propecia and should not handle crushed or broken tablets of Propecia. If a women who is pregnant with a male baby absorbs the active ingredient in Propecia, either by swallowing or through the skin, it may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in Propecia, they should contact their doctor as soon as possible.
